Sport has always been considered an integral part of education at Gresham’s and the School has earned an enviable reputation for the quality of its sport. We continue to have excellent participation of pupils playing for the School and many pupils are on performance pathways in their sport which are catered for by our TAD (Talented Athlete Development) Programme, currently led by rugby legend, Ben Youngs, our Head of Performance Sport.
Pupils recently have represented Leicester Tigers Academy, Norfolk Country Cricket Club, Nottinghamshire & Northamptonshire Country Cricket Club Academy and 2nd XI teams. Several of our pupils in the Rifle Club have represented Great Britain in recent months.
Pupil participation and performance are important in sport at Gresham’s. We encourage all pupils to be involved in many of the various sports we offer. Teams compete on a weekly basis throughout the year, with many fixtures played during the week and at weekends against schools and clubs. The latest list of fixtures and results are available here.
Our sporting facilities include 2 floodlit astro-turf pitches, 25-metre indoor swimming pool, large sports hall, over 30 tennis courts, an indoor 8-lane shooting range, seven rugby pitches, netball and squash courts, an athletics track and a cross-country course. Our state of the art Strength and Conditioning centre opened in February 2021.
In addition to the main sports of hockey, netball, cricket, rugby, shooting and swimming we also offer athletics, badminton, cross-country, football, circuits & fitness, equestrian, sailing, squash, tennis along with other optional activities including; basketball, golf, table-tennis and volleyball.
“Through a programme of nearly a thousand annual fixtures, the majority of pupils represent the school in at least one sport and a significant number of pupils follow a talented athlete development programme.”
