Below is a photograph of the vellum memorial to the boys of the Junior House who lost their lives in World War I. It was lovingly compiled by housemaster Wynne Willson.
There is also a list of pupils from the Senior School, and one member of staff Vivian Smith, taken from the 1920 war memorial in the School Chapel. The names of OGs, Hubert Kiver, Archibald Gilmour, Alexander Hanmer, Charles Ranson, William Rockley, Jack Sykes and Thierrry Faure as well as staff members Geoffrey Day and Charles Merryweather have been discovered since the World War I list was complied, and the names of Roger Faure and Robert Jackson are missing from the World War II list.
Sue Smart, ex-deputy head, wrote a poignant book about the fallen boys of Gresham’s entitled When Heroes Die (2001, 2014) enlisting the help of pupils for historical research. This tradition continues today in a World War I project with III form historians studying the life and death of former pupils using sources in the archives.
