An already experienced manager, Hugh Wright inherited a growing school with an outdated structure in 1985.
During his six years at Gresham’s boarding houses and classrooms were updated and facilities improved. Departments were restructured and new subjects such as home economics and theatre studies introduced. A new shooting range was opened, along with the Cairns Centre, and the Duke of Edinburgh opened the boarding house bearing his name in 1987.
Following his short but successful time at Gresham’s Hugh went on to become Chief Master at King Edward’s, Birmingham, and in his retirement has returned to Gresham’s to delve into the archives to research Auden’s school career.
